I built a turtle drawing machine myself, and building it taught me some of Cohen's design constraints. The turtle's wheels have to interface with the ground, and that adds enough imprecision that error accumulates after every turn — so his turtle drawings are giant, but they are made up of smaller drawings. I think he would draw until the imprecision built up, then move to another part of the paper and start another small drawing, and those add up to the giant one. At the Whitney show, his ex-wife told me he used a tampon as the ink reservoir in the turtle, and that it was her idea.
