Signed plotter drawing in ink on computer paper from Robert Mallary's Spiro Series of 1980. Mallary (1917–1997) made his first plotter drawings in 1967 at Amherst College's computer facility, learning to program his own graphics software, and continued algorithmic drawing alongside his pioneering computer-sculpture work while teaching at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Around 1980 he produced several small numbered series of plotter drawings — the contemporaneous Scribble Series (1980) and Ribbon Series (1981) are documented in gallery and SIGGRAPH records — of which the Spiro Series, its title evoking spiral line work, is a less-documented example.
