Description
STROKES 82-15 (1982), lithograph, numbered 35/80. Black bands, each rolled from deep black into silver-grey, sweep up to the right across a square of blue shading into violet. Where they cross, the graded tones overlap so the bands seem to twist like ribbons. The bands are hard-edged and even, while the square beneath keeps the grain and ragged edge of drawn lithographic crayon. It is a mature example of the series, after Hara's 1975–76 stay in Britain and the United States, when the strokes became evenly overlapped bands of graded colour. Inscribed in pencil below the image at left "35/80 STROKES 82-15" and signed at right "Takeshi Hara". Matted in a black frame under plexiglass. Light spotting in the lower margin; the seller reported wear to the frame and a water stain on the back of the frame that does not reach the print.
