Croissant Dump CD8225001
18 × 24 inches
Sharpie Creative Paint Markers
Black Bristol Paper
Croissant Dump began as a study of Mark Wilson's early plotter works from his Douat Dump series, editions of which are held in the collections of both Bre Pettis and my parents, Robert and Deborah Hendel. The title emerged from my initial misreading of Douat Dump as Donut Dump, leading me to name my own p5.js script Croissant Dump, unwittingly preserving the French connection to Wilson's original reference to Père Dominique Douat.
The composition is generated from a uniform grid of points, with three colors distributed across the field using Perlin noise. Rather than assigning colors randomly, the algorithm uses a noise-driven flow function to create continuous regions of color that shift organically across the grid.
While other works in the series introduce variations in point density, selectively removing marks to create areas of negative space, this composition is an uncommon example generated at 100% density. Every point in the underlying grid is retained, allowing the distribution of color alone to establish organic patterns within an otherwise rigid geometric structure.
Each composition is generated using a unique random offset within the noise field, producing a distinct arrangement of colors. The resulting artwork is exported as a vector file, with each color organized into separate groups for physical plotting.
This 18 × 24-inch work was executed using Sharpie Creative Paint Markers, which use a paint delivery system that does not require manual priming, making them particularly well suited to extended robotic plotting sessions.
Here is a video of it being made.
