Description
Sienar Fleet Systems' TIE/In Space Superiority Starfighter (2)
After ASCII art by Raymond E Brunner

Black polyurethane on carved plywood
Windell H. Oskay of Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories made this panel from a hand-typed ASCII drawing of a TIE fighter by Raymond E Brunner, which he found in an online ASCII art archive. Oskay scaled the drawing up until each typed character was large enough to carve. The design was cut with a V-carving bit on a CNC router, into 1/4" plywood finished in black polyurethane. Each cut goes through the dark finish to the pale wood beneath, so Brunner's keyboard characters appear in light lines, with the smallest details about 1/16" wide. Up close, the image dissolves into individual letters and punctuation; from a distance, the starfighter reappears.
Oskay wrote about how he made it in CNC Halftones with ASCII Art (Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories, January 4, 2012).
